The Mizoram government has launched a mobile application, ‘Khuarel’, to enable real-time sharing of disaster-related information, aiming to strengthen coordination between authorities and the public during emergencies, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma announced on Wednesday.

Developed in partnership with a private firm, the app is designed to facilitate swift communication and seamless exchange of information among citizens, the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, and state and district disaster management authorities.

Launching the platform, Lalnilawma said ‘Khuarel’, a Mizo term meaning nature, would help ensure timely dissemination of information and improve response mechanisms during disasters. He added that the application would also support systematic recording and management of disaster-related data, enabling authorities to track incidents and respond more effectively.

The minister described the initiative as a significant step forward and noted that Mizoram is among the first states in the Northeast to introduce such a system. He urged residents to download and use the app, highlighting its user-friendly design and practical utility.

Commissioner and Secretary of the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, Udit Prakash Rai, outlined the key features of the application, stating that it allows citizens to report disaster incidents instantly to the department and the District Disaster Management Authorities.

He said the platform would also enable authorities to send alerts and critical updates directly to users, ensuring that information reaches affected populations without delay.

Officials believe the app will enhance disaster response capabilities by improving coordination among districts and government agencies, particularly during extreme weather events and other emergencies.

The initiative comes amid recurring incidents of heavy rain and landslides in the state, which have underlined the need for efficient communication systems and quicker response times.
