Mizoram is fast emerging as India’s leading ginger hub, with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and NITI Aayog exploring ways to promote the state as the country’s “Ginger Capital”. The move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the production, branding, and market presence of the state’s flagship crop.
The proposal gained momentum during a high-level consultation on Mizoram’s ginger sector in New Delhi, jointly organised by NITI Aayog and the Mizoram government. Representatives from Farmer Producer Organisations, industry associations, and exporters discussed strategies to strengthen market linkages, improve processing infrastructure, and address supply-chain challenges.
Mizoram’s ginger, already supported under the state government’s ‘Bana Kaih’ scheme and minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 50 per kg, has expanded significantly in the past two years. Officials noted that maintaining the organic quality of the produce, adopting modern processing technologies, and diversifying markets domestically and overseas would be key to building a strong brand identity.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma said Mizoram’s premium-quality ginger has positioned the state among India’s top producers. He emphasised ongoing efforts to make agriculture a sustainable and profitable enterprise, highlighting improved investment and industry policies aimed at attracting private participation not just in ginger, but in other agri-based and value-added sectors.
The consultation also set the stage for the Ginger Buyer-Seller Meet scheduled in Aizawl on December 5-6, aimed at creating stronger business linkages and showcasing the state’s produce to national and international markets.
More than 60 participants attended, including NITI Aayog Additional Secretary Rohit Kumar, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, Food Processing Industries Secretary A.P. Das Joshi, Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, Mizoram Labour Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, and Chief Secretary K.R. Meena.
