The Mizoram government has raised the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 4 per litre each from 1st September to fund social infrastructure and road maintenance projects.

Taxation Minister Dr Vanlalthlana explained that the hike includes a new levy of Rs 2 per litre on both diesel and petrol as a “social infrastructure and services cess” and an additional Rs 2 per litre for road maintenance.

"The decision was taken for the benefit and welfare of the people," he said.

The minister expressed hope that the increased fuel prices would foster a sense of ownership among citizens regarding the state’s infrastructure development and maintenance efforts.

Despite the increase, Dr Vanlalthlana noted that fuel prices in Mizoram remain lower than in 2021. The decision follows recommendations from the State Resource Mobilisation Committee, which was tasked with finding ways to increase the state's revenue.

Alongside the new levies, the state government has also revised the Value Added Tax (VAT) rates. A recent notification stated that VAT on petrol has been raised from 5.23% to 10%, while VAT on diesel has gone up from 16.36% to 18%.

With these changes, the price of petrol in Aizawl now stands at Rs 99.24 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 88.02 per litre, up from Rs 93.93 and Rs 82.62, respectively.
