Piped natural gas (PNG) is set to reach households in Mizoram by early 2028, with groundwork advancing under the Centre’s North East Natural Gas Pipeline initiative.
The 119.5-km pipeline being laid by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) has achieved around 45 per cent overall completion and is targeted for readiness by December 2027. The project will integrate Mizoram into the broader regional gas grid for the first time.
State capital Aizawl and the town of Mamit are expected to be the first beneficiaries once the city gas distribution network becomes operational. Speaking at a sensitisation workshop on City Gas Distribution in Aizawl, state Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B. Lalchhanzova said the pipeline segment up to Sihhmui in neighbouring Tripura remains on track for completion by March 2027.
Once IGGL completes the stretch up to Sihhmui, Tripura Natural Gas Company Ltd (TNGCL) will begin developing the distribution network to supply PNG to domestic and commercial consumers in Aizawl and Mamit. Officials indicated that connections would roll out soon after pipeline installation is completed,
with full operationalisation expected in early 2028.

The workshop, organised jointly by TNGCL and the state department, examined the technical and economic aspects of PNG implementation. Lalchhanzova noted that Tripura has been using piped natural gas for over three decades and currently serves more than 60,000 consumers, including hotels and restaurants. He recently visited Agartala to review its gas infrastructure model.
According to TNGCL Managing Director Pralay Patra, the expansion aligns with the Centre’s target of raising natural gas’s share in India’s energy mix to 15 per cent by 2030. He described natural gas as a cleaner alternative to conventional fuels and a key component of the country’s energy transition strategy.
Gas supply to Mizoram will originate from the ONGC terminal in Tripura and pass through Kanhmun, Zawlnuam, Kawrtah, Tuidam and Darlawn before reaching Mamit. It will then extend towards Lengpui and culminate at the proposed Sihhmui receiving terminal, around 21 km from Aizawl, before linking with Silchar in Assam.
IGGL officials said welding work has reached 52 per cent completion, while pipe-lowering operations stand at 40 per cent, indicating steady progress on the ground. The PNG rollout is expected to enhance energy access, reduce reliance on traditional fuels and promote cleaner urban growth in Mizoram.
