The Mizoram government will soon introduce a crop insurance scheme to safeguard farmers from financial losses caused by natural calamities, pests or crop diseases, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister PC Vanlalruata announced on Monday.
He said a state-level coordination committee on crop insurance has been constituted, and a general insurance company has been selected following a tender process.
"One of our primary poll promises was buying agricultural products and introducing crop insurance to protect farmers from financial losses. Our chief minister is giving due concern to the welfare of farmers. We will now be able to implement crop insurance," Vanlalruata said while addressing a ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) event in Aizawl.

He also said the government is fulfilling its commitment to procure agricultural produce directly from farmers. Pointing to irregularities in the purchase and sale of ginger, the minister said the matter is under investigation.
Despite a slump in ginger prices, the government purchased the crop from farmers as promised during the 2023 Assembly elections, Vanlalruata said.
Purchasing five key crops, ginger, turmeric, chilli, broomsticks and unhusked rice, from farmers was among ZPM’s poll pledges. The procurement is being carried out under the state’s flagship ‘Bana Kaih’ or handholding scheme, launched in September last year.
Officials said the government has already spent about ₹140 crore as support price for procuring raw ginger and allocated ₹350 crore in the 2025–26 fiscal for the continuation of the scheme.
