A 47-year-old woman was arrested in Champhai on Tuesday after sleuths of the Narcotics Department seized methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 16.65 crore from her possession, officials said on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department and the Assam Rifles launched an operation in Champhai’s Lalen Veng area, where they recovered 5.55 kg of methamphetamine tablets.
The accused, identified as Zolianthangi of Champhai’s Venglai locality, was allegedly smuggling the contraband to Sribhumi in Assam, an official said.
She has been booked under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Authorities have begun probing the origins of the seized drugs and are investigating whether the woman was linked to a larger cross-border smuggling network operating along the India–Myanmar frontier.
Officials described the seizure as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to counter narcotics trafficking in the region, highlighting the significance of coordinated operations between state and central agencies in the porous border belt.
