Mizoram police have successfully rescued and repatriated three Mizo women who had been stranded in Syria for nearly 20 months.

The women, originally from Hnahthial and Champhai districts, were working as housemaids in Syria when they encountered severe difficulties.

The three women had left Mizoram in 2022 and arrived in Syria in November that year. However, their employment quickly turned problematic, leading to legal disputes with their employers in Syrian courts.

Their plight drew serious attention from Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga, who directed efforts for their rescue.

The rescue operation involved extensive coordination between Mizoram police, Indian embassy officials, and legal authorities.

The Indian embassy in Damascus provided shelter for the women while legal proceedings were underway.

With the issuance of exit visas, the women were flown to New Delhi on August 20 and then to Aizawl on August 24.

The state government maintained continuous communication with both the Indian embassy and Syrian authorities throughout the process.

The three women are now set to be reunited with their families in their respective villages within the week, bringing an end to their protracted ordeal.
