A mob attacked an Assam Rifles camp in Manipur's Senapati, vandalising property and setting vehicles ablaze after a security operation nearby.

A violent mob attacked an Assam Rifles camp in Senapati district, pelting it with stones, vandalising property and setting vehicles on fire. The incident occurred at around 9.30 pm on Tuesday at the paramilitary camp located in Naga Taphou area of Senapati town, hours after Assam Rifles had conducted a search operation in nearby Makuilongdi based on intelligence inputs regarding the movement of armed cadres.

According to officials, the operation was launched following credible reports suggesting that armed cadres had been moving outside designated camps with weapons and in uniform, in apparent violation of ceasefire ground rules. The matter was subsequently reported to the Ceasefire Monitoring Group.

A statement issued by the Defence PRO said the search operation covered the general areas of Makuilongdi and Oklong villages, Oklong being close to a designated camp of the NSCN (IM). During the operation, security personnel were reportedly obstructed by local residents, including women, who blocked the movement of the columns as tensions escalated.

Even as the search teams withdrew, information was received at around 9 pm that a large crowd had gathered in Senapati town and was heading towards the Assam Rifles camp. Shortly thereafter, a mob reached the camp and began hurling stones, damaging infrastructure and trying to set parts of the premises on fire.

Officials said the attackers targeted multiple vehicles during the violence. One light vehicle was set on fire, two trucks were overturned and damaged and a civilian car was also torched.

Security personnel, in coordination with the Manipur Police, used minimum force to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. Additional reinforcements from the Central Reserve Police Force were deployed to assist in restoring order.

The situation was later brought under control, officials said, adding that security forces remain on alert in the area.
