Sporadic instances of violence in Manipur’s Ukhrul town on Wednesday led to a mob storming a police station and looting weapons amid clashes between two groups.
According to officials concerned, the unrest, which left three dead and 30 others injured, unfolded during a land dispute related to a ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’ cleanliness drive.
The situation escalated when a mob, primarily composed of youths, attacked the police station at Wino Bazar while the violence was ongoing.
“After violence broke out in Ukhrul town, a mob comprising mostly of youths stormed the police station… and decamped with government weapons,” confirmed an official.
The exact number and type of looted weapons remain unclear as investigations continue, though sources have suggested AK-47 and INSAS rifles may be among the stolen arms.
Prohibitory orders were swiftly imposed, and mobile internet service has been suspended in the town.
As per sources, while previous incidents of arms looting in the state involved Meitei or Kuki-dominated areas, this is the first instance in a Naga-majority region.
The police continue to investigate and maintain a heightened presence in the area.
