A horrific incident took place in Mohali on Saturday evening when a five-storey building collapsed in Sohana. The collapse triggered chaos, and many people are feared trapped under the rubble.
Police and officials reached the scene immediately, and rescue operations are underway. After significant efforts, the NDRF team recovered the body of a woman from the debris. According to reports five trapped, one girl rescued; Army-NDRF leads rescue after nearby basement digging caused the collapse.
District authorities quickly began rescue efforts, using two excavators to clear the debris. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the fire brigade are also assisting with the operation.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his concern, saying, "Sad news has been received that a multistorey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) has collapsed. The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration."
He added, "We pray that there is no loss of life. We will also take action against the culprits. Appeal to the people to cooperate with the administration."
Senior Superintendent of Police (Mohali), Deepak Pareek, visited the site and confirmed that the rescue operation was in full swing.
He said, "There is yet no figure whether someone is (trapped) inside or not. Our teams are working. Efforts are on to clear the debris as soon as possible. Lighting arrangements have been made for the rescue operation."
A local resident mentioned hearing a loud noise when the building collapsed.
Initial reports suggest the collapse happened after a nearby basement was dug.
Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang and Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh also arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
Singh commented, "It is an unfortunate incident. Rescue operation is in full swing."
