The Central government on Tuesday gave the go-ahead for the much-awaited Mohali–Rajpura rail link and announced a Vande Bharat Express between Ferozepur and New Delhi in two major railway projects announced for Punjab by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu on Tuesday.

Once cleared in principle, the proposals will be sent for Cabinet approval.

The Vande Bharat Express will operate six days a week, except on Wednesdays. It will pass through Bathinda, Dhuri, Patiala and Ambala.

For the Mohali-Rajpura rail link, a demand pending for nearly 50 years, the railways will need 54 hectares of land, which the Punjab government will acquire and give to the Centre.  The rail link will enhance regional connectivity by linking Chandigarh with the Malwa region, including Rajpura, Patiala, and Sangrur.

Vaishnaw said the redeveloped Chandigarh railway station would be operational by 2026-27.
