Monsoon continues to wreak havoc in Himachal Pradesh, with 137 deaths reported so far this season, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) in its July 24 report.
Of these, 77 people have died in rain-related incidents like landslides, flashfloods, cloudbursts, drowning, electrocution, and falls in hilly areas. The worst-hit districts include Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, Chamba, and Una.
Another 60 deaths have been caused by road accidents, many of which happened due to slippery roads, low visibility, and damaged infrastructure caused by heavy rain. The highest number of accident-related deaths was reported from Solan (9), Kullu (7), Shimla (7), Chamba (8), and Mandi (6).
The SEOC reported heavy damage to public and private property. Over 22,800 livestock and poultry have died while the total economic loss is estimated at more than ₹1,382 crore.
Mandi with 17 deaths and Kangra with 16 deaths are the worst-affected districts. Rescue and restoration work is ongoing, and the SDMA is monitoring the situation round-the-clock.
Officials have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas and follow local safety advisories. Disaster response teams are keeping a close watch on the situation.
