The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh on Friday accused the Congress of politicising the recent Katni incident, in which a woman and her grandson were beaten by Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel. T
he BJP also criticised the Congress for its "silence" regarding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
On Thursday, the Madhya Pradesh government suspended six GRP personnel, including a police station in-charge, following the viral circulation of a video showing the assault in Katni district.
In response, Congress leaders staged a sit-in protest at a police station in Katni, demanding the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused officers. The Congress has claimed that the victims were Dalit.
In response, state BJP chief V.D. Sharma defended the government’s actions. “As soon as the 10-11 month-old video of Katni, which is part of my parliamentary constituency, came to my and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s notice, the government took immediate action by suspending the six police personnel. The government acts swiftly on such incidents,” Sharma said.
Sharma criticised the Congress for remaining silent on other issues, such as the alleged injustice faced by a tribal victim in Tikamgarh and a pre-planned attack on a police station in Chhatarpur.
He accused Congress leaders, including former chief ministers Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath, of ignoring these incidents.
Additionally, Sharma questioned the Congress’s lack of response to the Kolkata rape and murder case, suggesting that top Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had not addressed the issue due to its occurrence in West Bengal. He attributed this to the party’s alleged appeasement policies.
