Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Thursday announced a ₹2,500 crore campaign for water conservation and augmentation, calling for public participation to turn the initiative into a mass movement.

The campaign, now in its third year, will run for 139 days under the state government’s Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan.

“Works of about ₹2,500 crore will be undertaken for water conservation and augmentation across the state. Citizens must participate in water conservation. The ‘Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan’ should become a mass movement,” Yadav said while inaugurating the programme.

As part of the initiative, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation for projects worth around ₹22 crore in Indore, including the restoration of three major ponds.

Officials said the campaign would prioritise construction of new ponds, rejuvenation of old water bodies, repair of wells and stepwells, and the development and improvement of canals. Plans also include the revival of dry rivers and the creation of groundwater recharge structures.

Maintenance of more than 10,000 check dams and stop dams will receive special focus, along with efforts to improve drinking water quality and sanitation.

The initiative aims to maximise rainwater harvesting and ensure the long-term sustainability of water sources across the state, officials said.

The campaign comes amid growing concerns over water stress in several regions, with authorities emphasising the need for conservation, efficient management and community participation to secure future supplies.
