The Madhya Pradesh government has officially renamed Ujjain's Vikram University as ‘Samrat Vikramaditya University’ to explicitly honor Emperor Vikramaditya. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav during the university’s 29th convocation ceremony on Sunday.

In his address, Yadav emphasised the significance of the name change, stating that while many people already associate the university with Vikramaditya, the revision ensures that his imperial title is prominently recognised.

He noted that the decision was made with the approval of the governor, who serves as the university’s chancellor, and the higher education minister.

During the convocation, Governor Mangubhai Patel conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degree upon Chief Minister Yadav, who is originally from Ujjain.

Addressing the students, Yadav highlighted Ujjain’s historical and cultural importance as one of India’s seven holiest cities. He encouraged graduates to use their education to serve society and contribute to the nation’s progress, stressing the vast opportunities that lie ahead for them.

He also urged researchers to represent Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, and India on the global academic stage.

Governor Patel, in his speech, underscored Ujjain’s rich legacy in education, religion, literature, culture, science, and commerce. He cited the example of Lord Krishna’s education at Acharya Sandipani’s Gurukul on the banks of the Shipra River, reinforcing the city's historical role as a center of learning.

The convocation ceremony saw 70 students receiving degrees, while 99 meritorious students were awarded medals. Additionally, two researchers were conferred with Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degrees, marking a significant academic milestone for the institution.
