What was meant to be a joyous wedding celebration turned violent after a dispute over liquor allegedly led to an assault on the bride, groom, and their family members in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district.
The incident took place on Tuesday night in Patai village under the Aron police station area, where Mahesh Jatav was getting married. According to police, a group of local residents reportedly demanded that they be served liquor during the wedding event. When the groom refused to arrange or fund liquor, the situation quickly escalated into a heated argument, which soon turned into a physical altercation.
City Superintendent of Police Manish Yadav said that the dispute began when neighbours insisted on being provided liquor as part of the celebration. The refusal by the groom’s side triggered tensions, eventually leading to violence.
The groom’s mother, Sheela, alleged that the incident occurred shortly after the bride arrived at their home and post-wedding rituals were underway. A group of neighbours reportedly entered the premises and demanded money from her son to purchase liquor. When their demand was denied, they allegedly attacked members of the family.
Sheela claimed that the attackers assaulted the groom, as well as other family members. When she attempted to intervene, she, her husband, and even the bride were also allegedly beaten.
Police said that the accused also looted household items and cash during the chaos.
Some members of the groom’s family sustained injuries in the attack. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved.
