The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested nine Bangladeshi nationals over the past four days for illegally entering and residing in India without valid documentation.

These arrests are part of a larger operation that saw 43 individuals apprehended in December 2024 across 19 cases.

The latest arrests, which include eight men and one woman, were carried out in collaboration with local police in Mumbai, Nashik, Nanded, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

ATS officials revealed that the accused had procured Aadhaar cards using forged documents. “In the past four days, five cases have been registered in various police stations under the Foreigners Act and Passport Act. Further investigations are underway,” an ATS official stated.

December operations

The ATS, acting on discreet information, conducted raids in areas such as Vikhroli, Navi Mumbai, Akola, Nanded, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. These operations led to 19 cases being filed last month, with 43 Bangladeshi nationals arrested.

An ATS official commented on the modus operandi: “The accused used forged documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards to secure their residency. Investigations are focused on identifying those aiding in the creation of these counterfeit identities.”

The ATS has urged citizens to report suspicious activities and emphasised the importance of robust border security measures.

In a separate incident, the ATS raided an illegal telephone exchange in Bhiwandi linked to potential terrorist activities. These developments highlight the ongoing efforts to address security concerns in the region.

As investigations continue, the ATS aims to strengthen its efforts in collaboration with local police to ensure that such illegal activities are curtailed.
