Mumbai faced severe disruptions on Thursday as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all schools and colleges due to relentless heavy rainfall.
This decision comes in response to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) red alert for the city and surrounding districts.
Between 4 am and 1 pm, several Mumbai areas recorded over 100 mm of rain, with Malpa Dongri in Andheri receiving the highest at 157 mm.
Other areas include Paspoli in Powai with 155 mm and Dindoshi with 154 mm.
The IMD’s red alert extends to Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
The IMD also issued an orange alert for Ratnagiri, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Sindhudurg received a yellow alert.
The BMC has urged schools to notify parents and take all necessary precautions to ensure safety amid the continuing downpour.
Meanhile, heavy and continuous rains on Thursday caused severe disruptions in Pune, leading to the deaths of four individuals. The city faced widespread flooding as a result of the intense downpour.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the district, advising residents to exercise caution.
In response to the severe weather warning, schools and colleges throughout the region announced closures.
