In a significant crackdown on cross-border infiltration, police on Saturday arrested four Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian broker from Harudanga village in Raninagar, Murshidabad. Among those arrested is a Bangladeshi woman, whose identity has not yet been disclosed by the authorities.

According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted late Friday night in the Kalimandir area of Harudanga. During the operation, four Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended.

The male infiltrators were identified as Jamshed Ali, Mohammad Babu, and Akmal Hossain — all aged between 26 and 27. Jamshed hails from Dhulauri village, while Babu and Akmal are residents of Nazipur — both located in Bangladesh’s Chapai Nababganj district.

The Indian national arrested in connection with the case was identified as Sariful Islam Sheikh, a resident of Shivnagar in Raninagar. He is believed to have acted as a broker, facilitating the illegal entry of the Bangladeshi nationals into Indian territory.

Initial investigations suggest that the group entered India through smuggling routes, aided by local brokers. During interrogation, the arrested Bangladeshis reportedly admitted to crossing the border with the help of Indian contacts, seeking employment opportunities in West Bengal through Sariful.

Police are continuing their probe to determine if others infiltrated alongside them and to uncover the broader network behind the operation.
