Meghalaya’s music-loving Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, on Tuesday, fulfilled the dreams of the Eastern Brook Band, a talented group of visually impaired musicians, by gifting them musical instruments.

The gesture is part of the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme, a flagship initiative of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) aimed at promoting and supporting local talent.

The instruments were presented to the band members during a special ceremony at the Chief Minister’s residence. Sangma commended the band’s spirit and encouraged them to continue pursuing their dreams.

Comprising four members, the Eastern Brook Band has been making waves in the local music scene with their soulful performances, overcoming the challenges of visual impairment.

“Music has the power to transcend limitations and bring people together. I am thrilled to support this talented group of musicians and look forward to seeing them achieve greater heights,” said CM Sangma.

An official from the CMO highlighted the Chief Minister’s generous response to the band’s request for instruments, noting his deep admiration for their talent, dedication, and passion for music.

 “This initiative demonstrates the Chief Minister’s commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of all sections of society, particularly those with disabilities,” the official added.

The Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme aims to provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talent, fostering a vibrant music culture in the state.

Last year, Conrad Sangma, known for his love of heavy metal music, was seen enthusiastically playing his electric guitar at a café.

He captivated the audience with his rendition of ‘Wasted Years,’ a song by the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden.

Sangma revealed his deep passion for music, stating, "I've always been into music and I play the electric guitar whenever I get a chance. I enjoy performing live after important meetings and programs with my cabinet colleagues. Music is integral to my culture."

He humorously added, "Whenever some MLAs are unhappy about something, they listen to my music and forget what they were unhappy about (laughs)."

He also shared his recent experience performing at the G20 meeting, where he entertained ambassadors and colleagues, who thoroughly enjoyed his musical talents.
