In a powerful and emotional development, the mother of the RG Kar victim — recently elected as MLA from Panihati in North 24 Parganas — chose to attend court proceedings instead of her scheduled oath-taking ceremony in the State Assembly on Wednesday, saying that her daughter’s quest for justice takes precedence over her political role.
“I will take an oath later. My daughter’s justice comes first. She was my entire world,” she said while standing at the Sealdah Court premises, even as newly elected legislators were being sworn in at the Assembly.
The victim’s family has intensified its legal battle, demanding the immediate arrest of former Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh, along with Somnath Das and Sanjeev Mukherjee. According to the family, the three individuals were allegedly active on the day of the incident and attempted to destroy crucial evidence.
During the court hearing, the family’s counsel made serious allegations, claiming that efforts were made to hastily cremate the victim’s body soon after the incident. He further alleged that attempts to conduct a second post-mortem examination were obstructed.
The counsel argued that there was a deliberate attempt to “hijack” the body and carry out the cremation without proper documentation. An application has been filed seeking custodial interrogation of the accused.
Responding to the plea, counsel for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stated that decisions regarding arrests lie solely with the investigating agency. However, the agency indicated that it would submit a formal response to the family’s application.
As the CBI sought additional time, the court scheduled the next hearing for June 5.
The case has also taken on political significance following the recent Assembly elections. The victim’s mother secured a victory from Panihati, defeating Tirthankar Ghosh, son of Nirmal Ghosh. The outcome has added another dimension to the ongoing legal battle.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has already indicated that a new commission would be formed to investigate the RG Kar case, as part of a broader commitment to address crimes against women.
Standing outside the courtroom, the victim’s mother reiterated her determination to continue the fight. Her decision to prioritise the court hearing over her oath-taking underscored the personal and emotional weight of the case.
