A serious concern has swept across Kolkata after reports of unidentified drones spotted flying over key parts of the city on Monday night. The sight of drones buzzing through the dark sky has triggered a flurry of questions— where did they come from? Who was operating them? And what was their purpose? Kolkata Police is now actively investigating the matter.
According to sources in the Kolkata Police, four drones were seen flying over prominent areas including the stretch from Victoria Memorial to the Brigade Parade Ground. Particularly alarming was their reported presence around Indian Army’s Eastern Command headquarters Fort William— which is a sensitive military installation. As Fort William is classified as a 'red zone', any aerial activity, especially by drones, is strictly prohibited.
Initial reports of police suggest that the drones may have originated from the Maheshtala area in the southern outskirts of the city. The army has been alerted and both civil and military authorities are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. While a section of officials has not ruled out the possibility that the reports may be exaggerated or based on rumors, the ongoing investigation aims to verify the facts thoroughly.
Drones have become increasingly common in both civilian and administrative applications, from event coverage to law enforcement surveillance. However, in this instance, the type, origin and purpose of the drones remain unknown— deepening the mystery.
Given past warnings issued during times of heightened tension between India and Pakistan — especially concerning attempted drone attacks from across the border — the current incident has raised eyebrows. Though a ceasefire is currently in effect between the two countries, Indian defense officials are not taking any chances. The army has confirmed that the situation is under investigation and that all angles are being closely monitored.
In the current geopolitical climate, the unverified flight of drones over military-sensitive areas is being seen as a serious breach of protocol and a potential security threat. Authorities are now working to trace the source and intent behind the drone activity and have issued alerts to ensure no such incidents recur.
