28 years old who got married in April died after fall from third floor of the NDMC building in Lodhi Road, New Delhi

Mystery shrouds death of a  28-year-old newlywed woman who died in ‘suspicious’ circumstances after allegedly falling from the third floor of an NDMC residential complex in Lodhi Colony area.  Her family is accusing her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and murder, officials said.

Police have since registered a dowry death case and arrested her husband, while her family has accused him and his relatives of dowry harassment and murder. However, Cops say no evidence of foul play has surfaced so far and preliminary the case appears to be of suicide.

“The deceased, identified as Akriti, a resident of Pushp Vihar, was found critically injured after an alleged fall from the B-Block of NDMC flats at Palika Kunj on Saturday. She was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors declared her brought dead,” an official said. According to police, Akriti had married on April 24 this year and was working as a sales executive at a private company.

“As the death occurred within few months of marriage, proceedings have been initiated, and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate has been informed to conduct the mandatory inquest proceedings,” an officer said. All aspects of the incident are being verified and the enquiry is in progress.

However, the woman’s family has rejected the possibility of suicide and alleged that her husband and his family members murdered Akriti over dowry-related demands. Akriti’s younger brother alleged that the incident was being projected as a suicide to shield those responsible. He claimed that his sister, was a responsible and mentally strong person.

The family further alleged that she had been subjected to physical assault and harassment by her husband after the marriage. According to the family, the marriage was a love-cum-arranged alliance solemnised barely two-and-a-half months ago, making the circumstances surrounding her death even more suspicious.

Akriti, who married on April 24 this year and worked as a sales executive at a healthcare company in Chhatarpur, had hosted a small celebration for her colleagues before leaving the office with her husband, who had come to pick her up. Police said Akriti lived with her husband, who is currently unemployed, and her father-in-law, an inspection official with the Delhi government's labour department, in Pushp Vihar.

"She hosted a small party at work to celebrate her wedding. After the party, her husband came to pick her up from the office. She called her mother around 7 pm to say she was heading home," her uncle, Mananjay Sutar, said.Around 8 pm on Saturday, Lodhi Colony police received information that a woman had been critically injured after an alleged fall from the third floor of the NDMC residential complex at Palika Kunj. She was rushed to AIIMS, where doctors declared her dead.
