The district administration of North Sikkim’s Lachung town has successfully evacuated all stranded tourists after road blockages caused by landslides. Following the clearing of the roads, tourists were transported to Mangan, from where they will proceed to the state capital and other destinations.
The successful evacuation was the result of coordinated efforts by several agencies, local bodies, and individuals. The District Collector of Mangan, alongside the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Chungthang and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Chungthang, worked closely with local stakeholders to ensure a smooth operation.
The Pipons of Lachung Dzumsa played an integral role, offering full cooperation with the administration. The Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) extended strong support by coordinating with stranded tourists and assisting with logistics. The General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) contributed significantly by clearing roads, restoring them to motorable conditions.
Local taxi drivers, under the Driver Association of Chungthang, also showed exceptional commitment, transporting tourists safely. Construction companies A.K. Builders and SUL provided vital support with men and machinery to swiftly clear debris and damaged road sections.
The evacuation operations commenced on April 26 after the roads were declared safe for movement. District officials ensured all necessary arrangements were in place, from transportation to safety checks, ensuring that tourists could travel without confusion or fear.
Tourists had been stranded in Lachung for two days due to road blockages caused by landslides. However, Project Swastik personnel of the Border Road Organisation (BRO) successfully reopened the road leading to Lachung for light vehicles on Saturday.
Once able to move to safer locations, stranded tourists expressed relief and gratitude. "The relentless efforts and teamwork shown by everyone involved made this evacuation a success. The safety and well-being of every individual remain our top priority," an official statement noted.
The District Administration thanked all departments, associations, and individuals involved in the operation. Authorities assured the public that they will continue monitoring the situation closely to ensure safe travel and provide assistance as required. Regular updates will be shared to keep the public informed.
While Mangan district has faced difficulties due to natural disruptions, the recent evacuation operation stands as a testament to the power of coordination and quick action. The District Administration has urged travellers to stay updated on official advisories before planning trips to North Sikkim, and to exercise caution as restoration work continues in affected areas.
