A case of alleged sexual harassment has shaken Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh. A trainee doctor accused a security guard of misconduct, prompting swift action.

The matter grew serious when 20 other intern doctors also signed a joint complaint to the college principal, alleging similar behaviour. The college’s Sexual Harassment Committee conducted an internal inquiry and later referred the case to the police.

Principal Dr S S Dogra said the incident was first reported to the Head of Orthopedics on September 5 by trainee doctors and their association. The matter was then conveyed to the Joint Director of the college, who suspended the accused guard the same day.

Dr Dogra added that the issue formally reached his office the following Monday, after which he ordered an inquiry by the Sexual Harassment Committee. Written complaints from the trainees were also submitted later, but the probe was already underway.

Acting on the committee’s findings, the police registered a case. Superintendent of Police, Sirmaur, Nishchint Singh Negi, said a formal complaint was lodged with the police on September 7 by the Head of ENT, who also chairs the Internal Complaints Committee under the POSH Act, 2013.

“As many as 21 trainee doctors have alleged that the security guard indulged in inappropriate conduct, objectionable remarks and indecent acts amounting to sexual harassment,” the SP stated.

Police have booked the accused under Sections 75, 78, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials said the statements of the aggrieved trainee doctors will be recorded before the magistrate under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

They added that legal formalities are being completed and further investigation is in progress.
