Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has reviewed the ongoing heavy rainfall across several districts in the state. He has instructed officials to remain alert and prepared for more rainfall as a cyclonic storm is expected to hit on October 17.

The CM’s office reported that Naidu specifically assessed the impact in areas like Nellore. Some regions have already recorded over 20 cm of rain, raising concerns about flash floods.

The cyclonic storm developed from a depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal. According to the Andhra Pradesh Meteorological Department, it is moving northwest at 10 km/h. The storm is located 440 km from Chennai, 460 km from Puducherry, and 530 km from Nellore.

It is predicted to make landfall between Puducherry and Nellore on the morning of October 17. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across the South Coast and Rayalaseema, with some areas likely to experience extreme conditions. Wind speeds along the coast could reach 40-60 km/h.

Meteorological official Ronanki Kurmanath advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to the severe weather conditions. He also urged the public to stay alert and take necessary precautions. The Chief Minister instructed local authorities to provide him with regular updates from the flood-affected districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier confirmed that the depression was centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal, approximately 490 km east-southeast of Chennai as of 5:30 pm on Tuesday. The development coincides with the start of the northeast monsoon season, which has brought rainfall to southeast peninsular India.

The state government is closely monitoring the situation and has readied emergency teams to manage any crisis arising from the cyclonic impact.

The administration is also prepared to assist residents in flood-prone areas, ensuring that relief measures are in place should water levels rise further.
