Political temperatures remained high in Jharkhand over the Rajya Sabha elections as the nomination of BJP-backed independent candidate Parimal Nathwani was finally accepted after a two-day controversy over discrepancies in his nomination papers. The Returning Officer had earlier kept Nathwani’s nomination on hold following objections raised by Congress MLA Naman Bixal Kongari during the scrutiny process.
The primary objection related to inconsistencies in the candidate’s name, with some documents mentioning him as “Parimal Nathwani” while others listed him as “Nathwani Parimal.”
Congress leaders had also questioned details related to Nathwani’s undivided family status and alleged deficiencies in the disclosure of criminal records.
Taking note of the objections, the Returning Officer sought clarification and temporarily withheld a decision on the nomination. The issue triggered intense political activity outside the Assembly, where Congress leaders, including ministers and MLAs, staged a protest demanding the cancellation of Nathwani’s nomination.
Party leaders maintained that electoral norms must be strictly followed and warned that their agitation would continue until the matter was resolved.
Following the controversy, Nathwani personally visited the Assembly to present his clarification. Chief Electoral Officer of Jharkhand K. Ravi Kumar also reached the Assembly and reviewed the developments.
After examining the explanations and documents submitted by the candidate, election authorities approved Nathwani’s nomination, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding his candidature.
With the clearance of Nathwani’s papers, the contest for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand is now set among three candidates. Nathwani is contesting as an Independent with BJP support, while the ruling alliance has fielded Baidyanath Ram of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Pranav Jha of the Congress.
The nominations of Baidyanath Ram and Pranav Jha had earlier been declared valid during scrutiny. With three candidates in the fray for two seats, the Rajya Sabha election in Jharkhand has acquired significant political importance, drawing parallels with the high-stakes contest currently unfolding in Madhya Pradesh.
