The Congress party in Kerala found itself in an awkward spot this Saturday during what was meant to be a proud celebration of its 140th Foundation Day. What should have been a routine ceremony at the KPCC headquarters turned into a viral controversy when party workers sang the national anthem incorrectly right in front of the state’s top leadership.
The mix-up happened right at the start. Instead of the familiar opening line, the lead singer began with "Jana-gana-mangala-dayaka jaya he"— tripping over the lyrics before a room full of veterans. Among those standing on the dais were former Defence Minister AK Antony, VM Sudheeran, MLA PC Vishnunadh, and AICC General Secretary Deepa Dasmunsi. It was astonishing that despite the clear error, the anthem continued until the end without any of the leaders stepping in to correct the lyrics or restart the rendition.
The slip-up did not stay within the four walls of the office. A video of this went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from the public and giving the opposition plenty of ammunition. Adding to the embarrassment is the fact that this is a repeat offense; a similar incident occurred at a different Congress event earlier this year, which also ended up as a viral "cringe" moment.
While the video continues to rack up views and spark debates online, the KPCC leadership has yet to issue a formal comment or explanation for the oversight. For a party celebrating over a century of history, it’s a poorly timed blunder that has overshadowed the actual message of the foundation day.
