Protesting against the chargesheet against senior party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, leaders and workers of the Punjab Congress raised slogans against the BJP-led Central Government outside the Enforcement Directorate office here on Wednesday.
Terming the chargesheet as “political vendetta”, the protesters also accused the Centre of “misusing” central agencies and trying to “defame” the Gandhi family with “false” charges.
The party workers led by Jharkhand Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh and state in-charge K Raju raised slogans against the BJP-led central government.
On Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate said it had filed a chargesheet on April 9 in a money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper.
On Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and others before a special court here in a money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper. It had accused them of allegedly laundering Rs 988 crore. Senior Congress leaders Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda were also mentioned as co-accused in the chargesheet.
The demonstrators, under the leadership of Congress' Punjab unit chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, gathered outside the ED office and staged a sit-in. Partap Singh Bajwa, leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, former minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, MLAs Rana Gurjeet Singh and Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, and other party leaders and workers also participated in the demonstration.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Warring condemned the BJP-led Central government and filing of the chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. "The government agencies are being misused," Warring alleged.
He also claimed the government was bent on defaming the Gandhi family with false charges. Partap Singh Bajwa termed the chargesheet "political vendetta".
"It is unfortunate. The Central agencies should not be misused," he said, asserting that the party had complete faith that the judiciary would give them justice.
Congress leaders and workers also held a protest outside the ED office in Jalandhar district. The protest was joined by party leaders, including former chief minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and MLA Pargat Singh.
