In a decisive statement underscoring her party’s stance on national security, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee made it unequivocally clear that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will stand firmly with the Indian government on all matters of national interest.

Before leaving for Murshidabad on Monday to visit-strife-hit areas, Mamata stressed that there will be “no politics” over issues concerning the nation’s safety.

Following the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians — three of them from West Bengal — the central government had convened an all-party meeting in Delhi. Representing the TMC, senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay assured the Centre of the party’s unwavering support.

Echoing this sentiment, Mamata Banerjee reiterated, “We have categorically stated that on national security, we will stand beside the Centre. I will never play divisive politics.”

She also emphasised that her government had issued strict directives to party leaders and ministers to refrain from making insensitive or inflammatory remarks regarding the Pahalgam incident.

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Banerjee chaired a high-level cabinet meeting where she cautioned her colleagues to handle the situation with utmost sensitivity. Later, she publicly stated, “It’s unbelievable how targeted killings are taking place… This is a sensitive border area. I will not speak further, as this is not the time to stir matters.”

The central government, blaming Pakistan for orchestrating the attack, has taken a series of stern diplomatic and strategic actions — suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, cancelling Pakistani visas, halting bilateral trade and closing down airspace access on both sides.

Meanwhile, Pakistan continues to deny any involvement. Global powers including the US, Russia, China and several European nations have called for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement.

Mamata Banerjee, while expressing grief and solidarity, made it clear that her priority is cooperation in national interest. “Our government wants to support everyone, but if someone chooses not to accept that help, there is little we can do,” she remarked before boarding a helicopter to Murshidabad.
