Nayab Singh Saini will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Haryana in Panchkula on Thursday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top BJP leaders expected to attend. Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya will administer the oath.
Saini, 54, will serve as Chief Minister for the second time, after leading the BJP to an unprecedented third term in the recent assembly elections. The BJP secured 48 of the 90 seats, while the Congress claimed 37.
Saini had earlier replaced Manohar Lal Khattar as the BJP’s chief ministerial face in March, in a bid to counter anti-incumbency.
Saini, an OBC leader, was unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader in a meeting on Wednesday. His rise to prominence came at a time when the party was under pressure due to issues like unemployment, the Agnipath scheme, and farmers' protests.
Security arrangements have been heightened for the ceremony, where the new ministers in Saini’s cabinet may also take their oaths. Haryana’s government allows for a maximum of 14 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
Saini's leadership is credited with the BJP’s electoral success, defying exit polls that had predicted a Congress victory.
