Chaotic scenes erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday after the ruling National Conference and opposition BJP legislators clashed over the ongoing Iran war.
National Conference MLAs first staged a protest outside the Assembly and later moved inside the well of the House, criticising the US-Israel military action against Iran.
The situation escalated when BJP legislators tried to disrupt the protest. Opposition MLAs held posters and pictures of the assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, leading to a scuffle between both sides.
Security personnel had to intervene to separate the lawmakers.
National Conference chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, who led the protest, said, “We stand in solidarity with Iran.”
“The entire National Conference and the J&K government stand united. Just as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had earlier condemned the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, we are here today to do the same.”
“I have given a call for attention and moved an adjournment motion. We believe no country has the right to attack another sovereign nation, and the killing of a religious leader in this manner is condemnable. The top leadership of the country should also condemn it.”
The House was later suspended amid the chaos.
