The Congress and National Conference (NC) are set to jointly contest all five Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir, former state chief minister and NC leader Omar Abdullah said in a press conference on Thursday.
The announcement came after People's Democratic Party (PDP), which as part of the Opposition INDIA alliance was expected to share seats with the two parties, declared its intention to run solo for all the three seats in the Valley.
Addressing the media, Abdullah said, "They (Congress) have informed us and made it clear that all three NC candidates would have their support.
"In the next one or two days after going to Delhi it will be clear that the NC and Congress will fight together for five seats in J&K."
NC leader and party president Farooq Abdullah has already begun campaigning for the two Congress candidates in the Jammu area, he added.
About his being out in the poll arena, Abdullah said he would begin soon and “we will work hard to ensure that Congress candidates win in both Jammu and Udhampur.”
The Congress had pledged that wherever they had power in Kashmir they would use it to ensure that NC candidates win, Abdullah said.
He also spoke on the occasion about AAP leader Sanjay Singh's release in the Delhi excise policy case, and expressed the hope that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia would also be granted bail in the case.
