National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah stated on Sunday that the party will reveal its candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir following the official notification by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on August 20.
In a press conference, Abdullah explained that the party is finalizing its list of candidates. "It has been less than two days since the announcement of the polls. Please allow us some time as we complete our preparations. The notification for the first phase will be issued on August 20. We will announce our candidates after that and hope for a successful outcome," he said.
The first phase of the elections will be announced on August 20, with polling scheduled for September 18.
Abdullah criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its overconfidence and unrealistic expectations. He remarked that the BJP’s ambitious claim of winning "400 seats" was indicative of their inflated expectations.
He recalled that the BJP had similarly predicted winning 45 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections in 2014 but fell short, securing only 240 seats in the national elections.
"The BJP often emphasises numbers, but their performance does not always align with their projections," Abdullah said.
He maintained that the NC is approaching the elections with humility and realistic goals, seeking the people’s support without fixating on specific seat counts.
Abdullah also advised BJP leaders to focus on addressing genuine issues rather than making exaggerated claims about electoral success.
In other developments, former PDP legislator from Karnah, Javid Mirchal, joined the NC. Abdullah and other senior leaders welcomed Mirchal, displaying his deep connection with the people.
"It is a positive sign for the NC to gain such a leader, reflecting the current political climate," Abdullah commented.
