The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) unveiled the Meerut Metro on Saturday at the RRTS Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad. The new metro system features three-car trainsets with ergonomic 2x2 transverse and longitudinal seating arrangements, accommodating over 700 passengers, with 173 seats available per train.
For enhanced safety, platform screen doors (PSDs) will be installed at all stations, synchronised with metro operations to aid in crowd management. Selective door opening via push buttons will also reduce energy consumption.
Shalabh Goel, Managing Director of NCRTC, stated that the Meerut Metro is set to transform the city’s transport landscape, improving connectivity and quality of life. "This modern and reliable transit system will reduce travel times, ease traffic congestion, and drive economic growth. We’ve tailored the features to meet commuter needs for comfort and efficiency," Goel said.
Under the Make in India initiative, all trainsets for the Meerut Metro are manufactured domestically, with production taking place in Savli, Gujarat. Five trainsets have already been delivered to NCRTC. The trains, designed with a top speed of 135 km/h and an operational speed of 120 km/h, are built with stainless steel and feature energy-efficient regenerative braking systems.
They are equipped with automatic train protection (ATP) and automatic train operations (ATO) and include safety measures such as passenger emergency communication systems, fire extinguishers, alarms, and talk-back systems. Reserved seating for female passengers and senior citizens is also provided.
The Meerut Metro will operate along the existing RRTS infrastructure from Meerut South to Modipuram. At four stations—Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram—commuters can switch to Namo Bharat train services.
The 23 km corridor includes 18 km of elevated and 5 km of underground sections, with nine elevated stations, three underground stations, and one grade-level depot station. The metro will cover this distance in 30 minutes.
Goel affirmed that the project is progressing swiftly, with underground tunnel construction completed and finishing works underway at underground stations. Track laying is ongoing for the completed tunnels and viaducts, with the elevated section nearing completion up to Modipuram station.
"The RRTS and Meerut Metro project is advancing on schedule. We appreciate the support from the Government of India and the Uttar Pradesh government for fostering a development-focused environment," Goel added.
