NCW seeks police report on Kaliganj bomb blast

Demands clarity on whether adequate security measures were in place during the post-election celebrations in the politically sensitive area

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday formally sought a report from the Nadia district police superintendent, demanding clarity on whether adequate security measures were in place during the post-election celebrations in the politically sensitive and economically backward area where a 13-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a bomb.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) promptly intervened following the tragic death of Tamanna Khatun during a victory procession in Molandi village of Nadia’s Kaliganj Assembly constituency, an incident that triggered widespread outrage and cast a spotlight on the role of the police and local administration.

NCW member Archana Majumdar, who visited the victim’s family on Tuesday, questioned the police preparedness and intelligence gathering. "The mother whose lap is now empty has lost her greatest treasure. Whose fault is this?" she said emotionally, adding, “The police must be held accountable for their negligence. A child’s life was lost, was it just for celebrating a political victory?”

She confirmed that the commission has given 72 hours to the police to submit a detailed report on the incident, which occurred shortly after the counting of votes in the Kaliganj by-election in which the ruling TMC secured victory, has ignited a political storm. State Congress President Subhankar Sarkar, along with district leaders of the Left and the BJP, visited the grieving family on Tuesday.

Sarkar condemned the police, saying, “The police machinery is acting on the directives of a particular political party. Without unbiased policing, it is impossible to curb such criminal acts. Immediate and exemplary punishment is necessary for those involved.”

District BJP president Arjun Biswas accused the ruling TMC of exploiting the minority community. “The Trinamool government uses minorities as vote banks. What happened in Kaliganj is horrifying — the accused dared to kill a child and still roam freely. This is the reality of their governance,” he said.

So far, the police have arrested four persons— Adar Sheikh, Manowar Sheikh, Kalu Sheikh and Anwar Sheikh — in connection with the incident. All four are reportedly key suspects in the case and were remanded to custody by a Krishnagar court on Tuesday.

The key questions now being raised include whether the district intelligence unit had prior information about possible unrest during the procession and if the local police force was adequately deployed in the area known to be politically sensitive.
