BJP and NDA candidates celebrating their victory in Assam’s by-polls, securing all five contested seats, as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hails the win as a boost for the party ahead of 2026 elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) triumphed in Assam’s by-elections, clinching victory in all five contested seats: Bongaigaon, Dholai, Sidli, Behali, and Samaguri.

This clean sweep further solidifies the BJP’s dominance in the state, setting a promising tone for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

In Dholai, Nihar Ranjan Das emerged victorious with a margin of 9,098 votes, while Diplu Ranjan Sarma secured a commanding lead in Samaguri.

In Behali, Diganta Ghatowar defeated his Congress rival by 9,051 votes. Additionally, the NDA’s allies also celebrated success, with the United People’s Party, Liberal (UPPL) candidate Nirmal Kumar Brahma winning Sidli, and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Diptimayee Choudhury triumphing in Bongaigaon with significant margins.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the outcome as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for governance and development. The BJP had fielded candidates in Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai, while its allies, the AGP and UPPL, contested Bongaigaon and Sidli, respectively.

“Today’s results in Assam affirm that the people stand by the vision of Prime Minister Modi for a prosperous Assam,” Sarma said in a statement following the victory.

The Congress party, despite its defeat, reflected on its increased vote share. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi acknowledged the stiff competition faced by his party and hinted at strategic missteps, particularly the lack of alliances.

“We made a valiant effort, but our inability to form alliances made these by-polls particularly challenging,” Gogoi stated.

In contrast, Sarma, who had served as the BJP's co-incharge for the Jharkhand assembly elections, expressed personal disappointment over the party’s defeat in Jharkhand. Despite this setback, he emphasised the importance of respecting the mandate of the people.

“The loss in Jharkhand is deeply painful for me personally, even though we achieved victories in all five by-elections in Assam,” Sarma shared on X. He also acknowledged the dedication of BJP workers, stating, “I have witnessed the unwavering commitment and relentless efforts of our Karyakartas, who gave their all in this election.”
