The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday decided to contest the 2026 assembly elections in the state alongside its alliance partners, setting a target of 103 seats for the NDA in the 126-member House.
The decision was taken by the BJP’s state core committee, the party’s top policy-making body, during a meeting attended by national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state president Dilip Saikia, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other senior leaders.
The committee resolved that the party would campaign on issues of comprehensive state development alongside core ideological principles. Ahead of the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma discussed strategies with coordinators and in-charges of all 126 assembly constituencies to ensure effective dissemination of government initiatives and achievements.

Sarma also flagged plans for strict measures against polygamy, ‘Love Jihad’ and ‘Land Jihad’, as well as action against illegal encroachment on government, forest, tribal, grazing and satra lands, particularly by Bengali-speaking communities. He added that the government aims to finalise the tribal status for six communities in the upcoming assembly session after consultations with stakeholders.
Santhosh, on a two-day visit to Assam, outlined the organisational poll strategy, setting a target for winning every booth and providing guidance on creating a favourable public narrative for the party. He also held closed-door meetings with state leaders to review the BJP’s organisational strength and booth-level preparedness.
Currently, the BJP holds 64 seats in the Assam Assembly, while its allies, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF), hold nine, seven, and three seats respectively. The party aims to consolidate its strength across these constituencies to achieve the 103-seat target.
