The railway network in Assam and neighbouring states has achieved a significant milestone adding an impressive 1,824 kilometres of new railway tracks since 2014, surpassing the total railway network of Sri Lanka.

Sharing the accomplishment on social media, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on his official X handle, "Did you know, the railway network in Assam and NE has expanded by 1,824 km in the last decade, that's more than the total rail network of Sri Lanka!! That's the Modi Govt's focus on Northeast."

The recent budget for the Indian Railways has set aside a record Rs 10,440 crore for Assam and the Northeast for the fiscal year 2025-26, marking a nearly fivefold increase in budgetary support compared to the period between 2009 and 2014.

This substantial financial allocation is aimed at modernising the region’s rail infrastructure and expanding its connectivity with the rest of the country.

At present, railway projects worth Rs 74,972 crore are underway in the Northeast, promising to significantly enhance passenger and freight services.

The initiatives, according to observers, are expected to bolster trade, fuel economic growth, and integrate the region better with the national rail network.

In a bid to modernise rail stations, 50 railway stations in Assam are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These upgrades will provide world-class amenities, promote passenger convenience, and contribute to regional development.

Ongoing railway projects in the NE:

Bairabi–Sairang Line (Mizoram): This 51.38 km line aims to connect Bairabi to Sairang, near Aizawl. The project includes the construction of 142 bridges and 23 tunnels. As of July 2024, approximately 93% of the work has been completed, with an expected completion date in July 2025.

Jiribam–Imphal Line (Manipur): Spanning 110.63 km, this line will link Jiribam to Imphal. The project is notable for the construction of India's tallest railway pier bridge in Tamenglong district.

Dhansiri–Zubza Line (Nagaland): Covering 82.5 km, this line will connect Dhansiri near Dimapur to Zubza near Kohima. As of July 2024, 52% of the work has been completed, with a projected completion date in December 2029.

Proposed railway projects:

Bhalukpong–Tenga–Tawang Line (Arunachal Pradesh): A proposed 378 km line intended to enhance connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh.

Imphal–Moreh Line (Manipur): A 111 km proposed line aiming to connect Imphal to the town of Moreh on the India-Myanmar border, potentially facilitating international trade.
