The upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is expected to significantly impact voters across Telangana, with a large number of discrepancies and unmapped entries coming to light ahead of the exercise scheduled to begin on June 25.
According to officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI), nearly 30 per cent of the names in the 2025 voter list were not mapped with the SIR data from 2002. Of the total 3,38,29,018 voters in the 2025 rolls, only 2,36,54,232 have been successfully mapped. Among these, discrepancies were found in the details of 89,44,713 voters, who now risk deletion if they fail to submit valid identification documents.
Additionally, 1,01,74,786 voters fall under the “unmapped” category, further increasing the scope of the issue. In total, 1,91,19,499 voters have been flagged due to mapping errors or lack of mapping.
Officials indicated that many of these voters are likely to receive notices once they submit enumeration forms and will be required to provide supporting documents to verify their identity. Allegations have also surfaced that the mapping process may not have been carried out accurately in certain areas, prompting concerns among political parties about its potential impact on voters.
District-level data highlights the scale of the discrepancies. In the Maktal and Narayanpet constituencies of Narayanpet district, 4,23,118 out of 4,95,581 voters (85.38 per cent) were mapped. Of these, discrepancies were found in 1,87,149 cases, while 72,463 voters remain unmapped. Migrant workers and economically weaker sections in the region are expected to be among the most affected.
In Nirmal district, part of the joint Adilabad region, 2,12,270 out of 2,64,309 voters were mapped, with 95,439 discrepancies identified. In the Adilabad constituency, 1,61,056 voters were mapped out of 2,50,455, with around 71,000 cases showing errors.
In Nizamabad district, of the 14,39,900 voters across six constituencies, 12,53,284 were mapped, with discrepancies found in 5,07,143 cases. The highest number of discrepancies has been reported in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, where out of 29,78,532 voters, 12,89,802 were mapped and 8,38,150 were found to have incorrect details requiring verification.
Similar issues have also been reported from Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Hyderabad, and Sangareddy districts.
With the SIR exercise set to commence soon, officials have urged voters to ensure their documents are in order to avoid deletion from the electoral rolls. However, the scale of discrepancies has raised concerns over potential disruptions to voter participation in future elections.
