An inquiry into the shocking video showing a stray dog walking with a human leg in its mouth near a hospital in Shimla has pointed to serious negligence in the disposal of medical waste.
The video showed a stray dog carrying an amputated leg near the premises of the state-run Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities at Chamiyana in Shimla. After the clip surfaced, authorities ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The probe found that the leg belonged to 61-year-old Attar Singh. His leg was amputated during surgery at the hospital last Thursday. The amputated limb was kept inside an envelope in the hospital’s store room, and the sanitation agency had been instructed to dispose of it. On February 22 (Monday), staff reportedly forgot to lock the store room door. At some point, the dog entered the room and walked away with the amputated leg, the investigation revealed.
The video has been circulating on social media for the past few days, triggering public outrage and prompting the investigation.
Following the incident, the management of Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities has issued show-cause notices to the sanitation supervisor and sanitation workers concerned, officials said.
