Students at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya have continued their protest for the 11th consecutive day, undeterred by government intervention and deteriorating health among participants.
The hunger strike, led by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), supported by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU-NEHU Unit), has now become the focal point of campus unrest.
The protestors are demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, along with the registrar and other senior university officials, accusing them of administrative inefficiencies. On November 6, students escalated their agitation by locking down the university.
Toniho S. Kharsati, General Secretary of NEHUSU, dismissed the Ministry of Education’s recent announcement of a committee to probe the grievances, stating that it "fails to address the core demands" of the students.
He affirmed, “The ongoing hunger strike is focused on demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor, and the protest will continue until the government takes decisive action on this matter.”
Meanwhile, the health of several hunger strikers has deteriorated, prompting concerns over their wellbeing.
NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital after experiencing serious health issues during the protest.
Despite the intervention, including promises of an inquiry, students remain adamant that their demands be met. With no resolution in sight, the university continues to grapple with mounting pressure from its student body.
