Visva-Bharati University is hosting a landmark one-day conference on Friday at the International Bangladesh Bhavan, bringing together 377 universities and colleges from across North-East and Eastern India. The event, organised under the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Development 2025 programme, aims to strengthen the National Education Policy (NEP) and foster collaboration in education and trade-related skills.
Vice-Chancellors, working secretaries and principals from 13 Indian states — including West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, and the seven Northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura — have participated. Representatives from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have also joined the discussions. In total, around 500 delegates have registered.
Visva-Bharati Vice-Chancellor Prabir Kumar Ghosh has expressed pride in hosting the university’s first national-level conference since its establishment by Rabindranath Tagore, now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
“This is the first time such a major event is being organised at Visva-Bharati,” Ghosh said. “The Prime Minister has already stated that the National Education Policy has been successful. Along with discussions on NEP, the Business Academy Meet will also be held. We are grateful that the UGC chose our campus for this initiative.”

UGC Joint Secretary Abichal Raj Kapoor highlighted the collaborative approach of the conference. “This event is not about giving speeches,” he said. “It is about sharing experiences — both on NEP implementation and academia-industry linkages. The vice-chancellors will carry these insights back to their institutions for further action.”
Former UGC Chairman M. Jagadish Kumar, who played a pivotal role in drafting the NEP, will attend as the chief guest. Other key speakers include Nirmaljit Singh, former chairman of the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), and Manish Jain, Chairman of the UGC.
