During her visit to Assam, a woman from Nepal has come forward with allegations of harassment by a group of seven individuals, one of whom was a woman. The woman asserted that she was targeted by the group due to her attire, which they perceived as masculine.
However, details regarding the woman's age remain undisclosed.
In a distressing video shared on social media platform X, the victim recounted her traumatic experience, attributing the harassment to her attire being perceived as masculine.
"Just for being a girl with short hair and for taking a stroll in the neighborhood at night, I was harassed both verbally and physically by some people in Mariani," she disclosed.
The victim alleged that the mob forcibly dragged her out of her cab in Mariani, with one woman among them urging the others to tear her shirt to ascertain her gender. Describing the ordeal, she revealed, "They snatched my shirt where half of my chest was visible. They even assaulted me physically… One of the guys was a reporter," she claimed.
Despite seeking recourse from the authorities, the victim lamented being met with ridicule and disbelief by the police, who allegedly advised her to pursue legal action through the court system.
"The whole police station was mocking my dress, and the accused had good connections with the police… I was harassed to such an extent that I was being forced to show that I am a female in front of everyone to prove to them that I’m a girl," she asserted.
In response to the incident, the Assam Police have registered a case and assured that necessary actions will be taken.
In a statement on its X account, the police department informed, "Update regarding allegations of an assault on an individual from Nepal. A case has been registered in this regard. SDPO Titabor is in touch with the complainant and is closely supervising further action as per the law."
This distressing incident comes in the wake of another shocking event where seven individuals, including three women, were arrested in Assam for assaulting a 38-year-old Nepalese woman on suspicion of child-lifting.
The victim, identified as Kamala Dahal, was attacked after she offered chocolates to a child she encountered on the streets of Lower Haflong while visiting her younger sister in Assam's Haflong.
