In an attempt to make an impact on the emotions of the people of Bengal and become an integral part of the state’s culture, the Bharatiya Janata Party declared that it would hold its first oath-taking ceremony on May 9 in Kolkata. The choice of date holds great significance since it marks the birthday of the famous Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
Confirming the schedule to the media, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Samik Bhattacharya stated that the swearing-in of West Bengal’s new Chief Minister will take place on this auspicious day. The choice of date mirrors a theme Prime Minister Narendra Modi championed during his final campaign rally in Barrackpore, where he envisioned a "new Bengal" emerging alongside Tagore Jayanti. Following the BJP’s landslide victory on Monday, the Prime Minister revisited this motif at the party’s New Delhi headquarters, citing Tagore’s famous verses to describe a future where "the mind is without fear and the head is held high."
The administrative transition is already in motion. Senior Election Commission officials, Principal Secretary SB Joshi and Secretary Sujit Kumar Mishra, are due in Kolkata from Delhi today, May 5. They will deliver the official gazette notification of the results to Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who is then slated to formally brief Governor RN Ravi on Wednesday.
In line with constitutional protocol, the Governor is expected to invite the outgoing Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to tender her resignation. To avoid an administrative vacuum, she will likely be requested to stay on as caretaker Chief Minister until the new cabinet is officially inaugurated on Friday.
Rabindra Jayanti continues to be the pulse of Bengali culture, with activities such as reading, music, and humanism resonating in all parts of West Bengal. With their rise in power tied to the image of Tagore, there can be no denying that the BJP is signalling a new beginning for the state that has stayed true to its heritage. The planning for this significant political occasion is ongoing.
