Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the passing of three new criminal laws would make the justice process simpler and time bound. He added that after 2026, an FIR will be disposed of in about three years on an average.

He explained that the new laws, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), will transform the country’s criminal justice system.

Shah was speaking at a public gathering after inaugurating a week-long exhibition on the three new criminal laws in Kurukshetra, Haryana.

He said many people believe if they go to a police station, they would not get justice for years.

"I can say it with confidence that after 2026, a First Information Report (FIR) will be disposed of in three years on an average and justice will be ensured," he said.

He shared data from the first year of implementing the new laws. In 53 per cent of criminal cases across India, chargesheets were filed within 60 days. In 65 per cent of cases, they were filed within 90 days. In Haryana, the figures were even higher, with 71 per cent filed within 60 days and 83 per cent within 90 days.

The home minister said Haryana’s conviction rate had doubled to 80 per cent since the new laws were brought in.

He also said under the new laws, justice would be delivered within three years and there would be no more “tareekh pe tareekh” (repeated adjournments in courts).

The senior BJP leader added that the people of Haryana have given the party their mandate for a third straight term, and the government had left no stone unturned for the development of the state.
