Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, reportedly claimed during a polygraph test that the victim was "already dead" when he arrived at the seminar hall.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted the lie-detector test following Roy’s insistence on his innocence in the gruesome crime.

According to sources, Roy's responses during the test were flagged as "largely untruthful and inconsistent".

His demeanour was described as "unnerved and anxious", especially as he was confronted with key pieces of evidence by the investigators.

Despite his claims of innocence, the polygraph results raised significant doubts, revealing several unconvincing answers.

Roy maintained that he panicked and fled the premises after discovering the victim’s lifeless body.

His statements during the polygraph contrast starkly with his initial confession to Kolkata police, where he had reportedly admitted to the crime. Recently, however, Roy retracted his confession, alleging that he was being "framed".

Further complicating his defence, Roy reportedly told jail guards that he had no involvement in the crime and reiterated his claims of innocence during a hearing before the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) court in Sealdah.

He argued that his consent to the polygraph test was a bid to clear his name.

However, investigators from both the CBI and the Kolkata police found glaring discrepancies in Roy’s narrative.

An officer speaking on the basis of anonymity indicated that Roy’s attempts to mislead the investigation were evident.

Notably, Roy could not account for the injuries found on his face or explain his presence at the hospital at the time of the crime.

The victim, a young doctor, was discovered dead in the seminar hall during her graveyard shift. An autopsy confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted and sustained 25 injuries, including on her private parts.

CCTV footage placed Roy at the scene around 4:03 AM on August 9, with investigators also finding his Bluetooth headset near the crime scene.

Psychoanalytic profiling of Roy painted a disturbing picture, describing him as a “pervert” with “animal-like instincts” and a severe addiction to pornography.
