The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has developed an all-weather ‘Bihutoli’ at Maligaon in tribute to Assam’s celebrated musical icon Zubeen Garg, creating a dedicated cultural space for traditional festivities and community gatherings. In a statement issued on Monday, NFR announced that the newly built cultural ground has been named “Zubeen Garg Railway Bihutoli,” reflecting the deep admiration and cultural connection the artist shares with the people of Assam.
A Bihutoli serves as a designated venue for hosting Bihu celebrations and other cultural programmes. The Maligaon facility has been developed with modern infrastructure, including a permanent stage, dining hall, toilet complex, community space, and a boundary wall, making it suitable for year-round use.
The venue is set to host the upcoming Rongali Bihu celebrations from April 14 to 17, which will be organised by the Pandu Bihu Sanmilani, Maligaon.
Ahead of the festivities, a pre-Bihu opening event was held at the site, marking the inauguration of the cultural ground. The event was attended by Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of NFR, and featured traditional Bihu performances that saw enthusiastic participation from railway officials, local residents, and cultural enthusiasts.
On the occasion, Palmee Borthakur, sister of Zubeen Garg, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the family for the honour bestowed upon the legendary singer.
The initiative by NFR is being seen as a significant step toward promoting Assam’s cultural heritage while providing a permanent space for community celebrations in the region.
