The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a supplementary chargesheet against two Maoist operatives in connection with the 2023 murder of BJP leader Ratan Dubey, invoking charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The second supplementary chargesheet was submitted to the special NIA court in Jagdalpur. The two accused, Shivanand Nag and his father Narayan Prasad Nag, have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the UAPA.
The agency’s investigation found that the duo were actively involved in the criminal conspiracy leading to Dubey’s brutal killing. According to the NIA, the Nags were active operatives of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) and were motivated by political, business, and personal rivalry with the victim.
Ratan Dubey, who was the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Narayanpur district unit vice-president in the Bastar region, was hacked to death with hand axes during an election campaign in a crowded weekly market at Koushalnar village in November 2023. The NIA is of the view that the targeted killing was intended to disrupt the election and terrorise the local population.
The NIA took over the probe in February 2024, and since then has established the role and involvement of members from the Bayanar and Barsoor Area Committees of the Maoist East Bastar Division, as well as their overground workers (OGWs).
With this latest filing, the agency has now submitted one main chargesheet and two supplementary chargesheets in the case. Accused, Dhan Singh Korram, was chargesheeted in June last year, while two others, Sainuram Korram and Laluram Korram, were subsequently arrested and chargesheeted in December 2024. Further, investigation into the case remains ongoing.
