The Central Government has handed over the investigation into the July 13 IED blast in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), citing the gravity of the offence and its national security implications.
The explosion, which took place at Khopanala in Chumoukedima village, claimed the life of one Assam Rifles jawan and left four others injured. The incident occurred when a convoy of Assam Rifles vehicles was passing through the area.
In a statement, Nagaland Police said the state government had been informed that the Ministry of Home Affairs, through a communication dated July 27, 2026, had entrusted the investigation of the case — registered at Chümoukedima Police Station — to the NIA.
According to the Centre, it has formed the opinion that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act 2008 had been committed in connection with the blast. Exercising powers under Section 6(5) read with Section 8 of the Act, the Ministry directed the NIA to take over the case.
“The Central government, taking the view that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 has been committed in the instant case, and in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 6(5) read with Section 8 of the Act, has directed the NIA to take over the investigation of the aforesaid case, having regard to the gravity of the offence and its national security implications,” the statement said.
The Nagaland government and state police will coordinate with the NIA to complete the necessary legal formalities for transferring the case, the statement added.
